Dear Christine and David,

You will no doubt recall that I have been banging on these past
years about censorship in the UK and that, for example, since
26th January 2009 it has been illegal for anyone in England and
Wales (and now Scotland, I believe) to possess an "extreme"
image, even if the activity itself is legal.

Well, I was intrigued to learn that the new UK coalition
government has kicked off an initiative, I quote "to create a
more open and less intrusive society. We want to restore
Britain's traditions of freedom and fairness, and free our
society of unnecessary laws and regulations - both for
individuals and businesses".

Hello,

As of tomorrow, 26th January 2009, it will be illegal for anyone
in England, Wales and Northern Ireland to possess an "extreme"
pornographic image, even if the activity itself is legal.

This law is about possession, not just publication, so it
affects every individual in England, Wales and Northern Ireland
as of midnight tonight. It will of course cover images you have
on your computer, so you may want to read some of the
definitions and links herein.

Over the past 18 months I have been writing here about a bill
which will be discussed in parliament this April 2007 which will
make it illegal to possess images of "violent" pornography. If
you have a even a few mild BDSM pictures and live in the UK this
act could make you a criminal and liable for up to 5 years in
prison. (In addition to police raids, court appearances and
such).

Dear Christine and David,

I expect that you have heard of the UK Government's plans to
make viewing of "violent pornography" a criminal offence with a
maximum sentence of 3 to 5 years imprisonment.

I was appalled to learn of this proposal, and have spent some
time looking at the government's consultation document and
preparing my response to it.
